Esmeralda “Es” Devlin is a British designer known for creating large-scale performative sculptures and environments that blend music, language, and light. Es has undoubtedly set a trend due to giving such a drastic turn to the scenographic design for plays, however what made it known worldwide are the visual experiences for artists such as Beyoncé, U2, Adele, Kanye West, among others.

In addition, Devlin was in charge of the closing ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012 and the opening of the Rio Olympics in 2016.

In order to elaborate and design the scenographies, she considers that the first thing to do is to know the spaces where the shows will be held so that in this way she can empathize with the environment and adopt all the points of view of the spectators.

In relation to the points of view, for the designer it is a very important characteristic that must be taken into account. We live in a connected world, and in shows the artists are usually photographed by the entire public from every angle of the venue, so from each place the show is experienced in a different way, it is then that through digital elements the designer seeks that the artists can be viewed by the entire public.

What Devlin seeks is that from the songs, scripts, etc; a story can be told with the support of visual resources and in this way it can connect with people.

If you want to know more about the work of this incredible artist, you can watch her episode "Es Devlin: Stage Design" on the show "Abstract: The Art of Design" on Netflix.
